A long coastline of about 7516 km, flat coastal terrain, high population density and the
geographical location make India extremely vulnerable to cyclones and its associated hazards like storm surge, high winds and heavy rainfall. Approximately 5700 Kms of the country`s coast line is susceptible to severe cyclones. Recurrent cyclones account for a large number of deaths, loss of livelihood opportunities, loss of public and private property, and severe damage to infrastructure, thus reversing developmental gains at regular intervals.
